Significant change is coming to our sector in 2025 with the implementation of the Future Buildings Standard.
Let us unpack what it means:
The Future Buildings Standard (FBS) is designed to ensure that new builds are future-proofed with low-carbon heating and “world-leading levels of energy efficiency”.
For the fenestration industry, the overall U-values of windows fitted into new homes will reduce to 0.8. The current threshold has been set at 1.4 or better as a staging post before the 2025 reduction. The additional 0.6 reduction to reach 0.8 in new homes presents a challenging target to meet in just two years.
With the FBS affecting both new homes and new non-domestic buildings (including commercial properties), the fenestration industry must come together to take the necessary steps to meet the challenges of a more efficient and sustainable future.
It could even be an opportunity.
The British Government wants to see at least 300,000 new homes built each year while doing what it can to enhance the performance of existing properties to meet net-zero targets, and this presents the chance to provide efficient window solutions that show the UK fenestration industry is doing all it can to limit its carbon footprint and help the environment.
It would be a great achievement.
Rest assured, the team at Clayton Glass is determined to do all it can to meet these challenges and seize the opportunities the change in regulations presents.
Managing Director Ryan Green had this to say:
“We continue to invest 7 figure sums to tackle these changes in legislation which will increase our triple glazed capacity exponentially over the next 2 years.
With plans to install new higher capacity toughening plants, additional cutting machines and more sealed unit lines across our sites, we will ensure we are well positioned when these new regulations come into play.”
